Cut a thin slot into the side of the wood from 1/4" to 9/32" in thickness using a slotting cutter. The 3 or 4 winged slotting cutter and a bearing are placed on an arbor. The size of the bearing controls the depth of cut which can range from 1/4" to 5/8" in depth.
